Tabernacle of the Sacrament
This precious marble tabernacle, forepart of a Eucharistic shrine, shows a classical monumental architecture. The rich decoration seems more chiseled than sculpted, recalling the care and the sensibility of a goldsmith.
The work was carried out by the architect and sculptor Benedetto da Maiano. Along with more or less direct followers of the great Donatello, he was the one who developed the strongest sense of decoration and furnishing. Among the extraordinary works of this artist, whom Giorgio Vasari deeply admired, we recall the two hexagonal temples of Siena and San Giminiano, akin to our tabernacle as far as architectural and decorative invention are concerned.
