Santa Giuliana de’ Banzi
This noble and enigmatic female figure represents Giuliana de’ Banzi, a legendary widow and benefactress who lived between the IV and V century and was venerated as a saint in Bologna.
The elegant terracotta bust, it’s fullness modeled with great virtuosity, shows Nicolò dell Arca’s great talent with moulded clay. This sculptor, who was the author of the masterpiece Lamentation on the Dead Christ in Bologna’s Santa Maria della Vita, mastered this technique to such a level that one called him “magister figurarum de terra”.
